Alex von Furstenberg Carries on the Family Tradition of Excellence
Few families are blessed with scions that uphold and carry on the tradition of excellent standards in work ethics and social values associated with the family name. Fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg must be very proud of her son Alex who has carved a similar distinction for his name in Wall Street and the American corporate landscape. Her DVF Studio LP was a direct beneficiary of her son’s maverick investment and entrepreneurial skill when Alex von Furstenberg transformed a mere $1 million company into a phenomenal $200 million high luxury lifestyle brand for the rich and famous with a global presence and brand recognition. Alex continues the high work ethics behind the pedigreed Furstenberg name with a string of investment companies he has founded even before reaching the age 40.
As early as 2001, when Alex von Furstenberg was just in his early 30s, he founded Arrow Capital Management, LLC, a private investment company that not only manages the family fortunes but also manages public equities that are annualized to earn 22.4% over an 8-year investment period. Subsequently, he founded Ranger Global Advisor, a family equity firm that invests on high value business opportunities. He serves as managing partner and Chief Investment Officer in both companies. In addition, Alex sits in the boards of various companies. As recent as 2008, Alex served a director at the New York Based IAC (InterActiveCorp) along with Disney’s Michael Eisner and foster father Barry Diller as board chairman.. Not many people know that IAC is an internet company with a stake in more than 50 online brands such as ShoeBuy.com, Excite.com, Ask.com, Vimeo.com, and Thesaurus.com, to mention some. Alex is also a board director at the Bermuda-headquartered W.P. Stewart and Co. Ltd., an investment and portfolio management company with assets in the US valued in excess of $1.6 billion since it was founded in 1975.
People may be thinking that with such a pedigreed royal family background with ancestry tracing back to Emperor Napoleon I, Alex must have a host of master’s degrees. But actually, his academic background is modest. There are no MBAs for Alex von Furstenberg to stand out in the corporate landscape. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1993 from the Rhode Island based Brown University, one of the oldest Ivy League campuses founded in 1764 prior to the nation’s declaration of independence.
But what has endeared Alex to his colleagues, friends and the beneficiaries of his largesse is his down-to-earth humility and humanity. For a pedigreed personality with entrepreneurial successes, Alex has a big heart. His directorship at the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation as well as Friends of the High Line allows him to engage in numerous philanthropic and social welfare initiatives. He contributes generously to various charities, art colleges and museums and private foundations.
